                    Necker Island

One of Sir Richard Branson’s smartest early
purchases was Necker, a 74 acre island in
the Caribbean. He fell in love with the island
when he visited it in the late 1970s.
                                Sir Richard Branson

In 1969 Sir Richard started a mail-order business called Virgin and to
this he added a record shop in Oxford Street, London.  In 1972 he set up
a recording studio in Oxfordshire where his first hit “Tubular Bells” was
recorded by Mike Oldfield. The studio then recorded many more hit
records with top artists.

The inception of the airline Virgin Atlantic was in 1984 and later on a
space tourism venture, Virgin Galactic, occupied his attention. By April
2013 more than 500 people had bought tickets for Virgin Galactic’s
space voyages.

Sir Richard also undertook a number of sporting challenges, in particular
the record breaking Atlantic crossing in his 22m powerboat Virgin Atlantic
Challenger II in 1986, and the first crossing by hot-air balloon of the Atlantic
(1987) and Pacific (1991).
          Commander Charles Jenkins

In 1986 the compiler of this website, Mark
Skinner, and his wife Jo moved to Langford in
Oxfordshire where Charles and his wife
Elizabeth were already living.

Soon after Elizabeth and Jo met whilst dog-
walking and when they introduced themselves
Elizabeth asked Jo if she knew of a connection
with Bishop Robert Skinner and so it transpired
that both families were descended from him.

As a result of this we are indebted to Charles
who had in his possession a detailed family
tree and from which almost all the records on
this page are derived.
